RED OAK – The students at Red Oak ISD are going for the gold this week wearing the color to remind those in the community about Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September.

From Sept. 9 to 13, Beth Trimble, Red Oak ISD Director of Communications said students and staff will be wearing gold to support childhood cancer research and awareness, those who are impacted in the district, and a foundation started by ROHS Junior Anna Day.

Students were able to make a $1 donation to the cause this past Monday and in return were given permission to wear sweatpants that day to school.

The proceeds were then presented to Anna’s Bake Sale Foundation, which supports research and awareness.

The foundation was started after Day’s little sister was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at 19-months-old seven years ago.

Trimble stated in a press release, since Anna’s Bake Sale Foundation was founded and money began being raised through bake sales, the Red Oak ISD high school student has donated over $40,000 to pediatric cancer research.

Students have also been encouraged to wear gold shirts with jeans on Wednesday, Sept. 11 for the district’s monthly Colors for Caring Day.

Then on Friday, Day’s

sister Isabella and her family, along with Red Oak ISD students who are cancer survivors and the family of a child who earned wings due to childhood cancer will attend the ROHS pep rally.

The pep rally, themed Golden Superheroes, is specifically designed to bring awareness to childhood cancers and support to the families.

The football game that evening will have the Red Oak Hawks wearing gold wristbands to support Go Gold week. Go Gold Week is not only supported by local schools, but is also being recognized by several NFL, MLS and MLB teams this month.

Red Oak High School’s student council has organized numerous activities during the week for student participation too. Also at the football game, a student council member will present a check at halftime to Anna’s Bake Sale Foundation.

Both ISD school board members and City of Red Oak’s Mayor Pro-Tem Gordon Toney will be in attendance.

Anna’s Bale Sale Foundation will hold its annual bake sale on Saturday, Sept. 21.
