FERRIS – On Sunday, July 7, around 12:43 p.m., Ferris police and fire personnel responded to a fiery three-car crash on Interstate Highway 45, (mile marker 267) in the northbound lanes, adjacent to the Taco Bell and Commercial State Bank.

First responders saw one vehicle burning and wrecked, and two other vehicles wrecked.

There were reports one of the occupants – possibly the driver of the burning vehicle – ran from the scene on foot and could not be located.

The other occupants sustained minor injuries and were able to exit their vehicles. Ferris Fire Department assisted by Wilmer Fire Department, extinguished the flames and investigation began and continues.

The crash caused all three Northbound lanes of Interstate Highway 45 to be closed down for approximately 90 minutes.

Officers from Ferris, Ellis County Sheriff Department, Wilmer Police Department, Red Oak Police Department and Texas Department of Public Safety re-routed the traffic through the City of Ferris and down the I-45 access roads.

Traffic conditions were very heavy at the time of the crash; outdoor temperatures were rather high.

Several of the police officers commented that many motorists were helpful, some gave bottled water and Gatorade to police officers directing traffic in the heat.

The crashed vehicles were eventually removed from the scene and traffic began to flow normally.

Ferris Police Department is preparing official reports and records and working to complete the crash investigation.

There is no indication of any intoxication being a factor. There are still unanswered questions and police hope to finish the investigation soon.
