Storms across the area Sunday afternoon spread debris through damaged neighborhoods and left several hundred thousand residents without power.
Winds were strong enough – up to about 70 mph – to topple large trees onto cars and homes.
Traffic signs, as well as billboards were dislodged, and light poles and other small structures were strewn about.
“Looks like it was yanked right out of the ground by the roots!” said David Maki referring to an uprooted tree in his front yard. Maki lives on South Wood St. in Ferris.
He said his electric was more off than on most of the afternoon and night.
“Our neighbor across the street had a swing set blown out of her yard, landing within inches where their car is usually parked,” said Maki.
But power outages were a more widespread problem.
Oncor estimated some customers could be without power for several days and had requested mutual aid from other parts of the country to help restore service.
Businesses, like residences, were affected, with stores closing or relying on backup generators for minimal services.
