FERRIS – The Ferris ISD Robotics team took second place at this year’s UIL Robotics State Championships.

“The team qualified for state and placed second overall,” said Ferris ISD Superintendent James Hartmann “Huge accomplishment.”

Indeed, it was for the 11 students participating; six seniors, four juniors and one sophomore from Ferris ISD.

“Teams compete in five qualification matches with a randomly assigned partner and opponents to earn points,” explained Eric Evans M. Ed., CTE STEM teacher as well as teaching classes in Principles of Applied Engineering, AP Comp Sci Principles, AP Comp Sci, Robotics I and Robotics II.

“The top four teams following qualifications become the four seed captains. Ferris had the second-highest number of qualifying points and was therefore the second captain.”

From there Evans said the captains pick their partners for the double-elimination semi-finals and finals.

Ferris survived the double-elimination semi-finals to advance to the finals. The team lost match one of the finals, won match two, and fell in match three to take State Runner-Up.

The project presented by the Ferris team was the FTC 12645 season robot playing the Rover Ruckus game.

The city of Ferris is no stranger to robotics, since back in February a qualifying tournament to determine who advanced on to the NTX-United States Regional Tournament was hosted by Ferris ISD.

“UIL uses team performance at the US Regional Tournaments to determine who qualified to participate in the UIL Robotics State Championship,” Evans explained.

The Ferris team was up against the top 24 1A to 4A robotics programs in Texas.

The event was held in Austin, and the FTC 14238 from Livingston took first place.

“I am extremely proud of the FHS Robotics Team for earning the Silver Medal at the State Competition,” Hartman concluded. “Their success is a crowning achievement for the entire school district STEM; science, technology, engineering and mathematics program.”
