FERRIS – A stray pit bull attacked a seven-year-old playing in his front yard Sunday in the 600 block of Pecan Street, according to police reports.
Witnesses said three dogs were roaming Pecan Street when the attack occurred.
Since Ferris does not have an animal control officer, Ferris police were called.
Officer Christian Cortez took immediate steps to save the child.
The child was transported by CareFlite to Children’s Hospital for medical care. His condition was not released.
According to Facebook’s “Ferris TX News & News You Can Use” site, Derrick King stated, “(I) run out and the dog has a lock on this 5 (7)-year-old kid’s knee as if he was another pit bull, it was crucial to see this dog dragging this little boy,
“I finally was able to hit the dog hard enough, he let go of the kid,
“His pants was full of blood as well as mine from the kid dripping blood everywhere.”
Officer Cortez made contact with the owner of the dog, who lives in the 500 block of Pecan Street.
In accordance with the City of Ferris Animal Control Ordinance, Officer Cortez impounded the dog. The dog will be held at the City of Ferris Animal Shelter for evaluation.
According to Ferris Police, the investigation is ongoing.
On the same Facebook comment chain, Kelley Smith stated, “It’s the same on Meadowridge. I worry about the kids walking from school... or just playing outside.”
Shelby Turner added, “I can’t even go on a walk with my kids or even with my dog bc I’m scared a dog will try to run up on us or attack my dog!”
