GLENN HEIGHTS – Voters will take to the polls in Glenn Heights Feb. 23 for the runoff mayoral race after a special election late last month left former city councilmember Harry Garrett and newcomer Sheena Morgan vying for the coveted seat.
With five candidates originally, Garrett came away with 46.97-percent of the vote after Dallas and Ellis county votes were tallied in unofficial results.
The decision on whether it would be Morgan or former Glenn Heights mayor Leon Tate was decided when four provisional votes were included.
Only one of the four votes were eligible giving Morgan an additional vote and a three-vote lead against Tate.
Morgan ended with 75 votes to Tate’s 72 votes.
Garrett said if he wins the seat, “I will bring harmony, respect and unity to the council. Every voice will be heard, every idea will be given due consideration.”
He said he wanted to focus on breaking ground on the city facilities, maintain and upgrade city parks and continue repairing the streets and roads.
He also proposed a change in the pay grade for the city’s frontline employees “so they make at least a living wage,” he said.
“All these things can be done now without delay. The funding is available.”
Morgan said she had three key goals if she wins the seat.
She wants to “Work with the city staff to develop a community forum that allows for shared discussion on issues and ideas to help move the city forward and identify areas of improvement, work with local adjoining city leaders to identify potential partnership opportunities related to economic growth in Glenn Heights and develop a strategy and establish a focus group from the creation of a small business resource hub within the city.”
Former Mayor Tate was removed by city council.
