WILMER – The City of Wilmer swore in three council members Monday night following the May 1 election.

Incumbent Jeff Steele was sworn in by Wilmer City Secretary Mayra Ortiz followed by newest member Wally Leto, who will be serving his first term on the city council.

By phone, incumbent Candy Madrigal was also sworn in for another term by Ortiz.

Leto had his family with him for the swearing in; wife Rebekah and daughters Nathalie, 3 and Abigail.

Leto said he ran for the seat this term because, “I always wanted to do something, but it was when we were trying to build a patio in the city and they denied everything I was asking for.

“So I said I will just run for city council and change this, but I did get my patio done.”

Wilmer Mayor Sheila Petta also displayed a plaque to be presented to outgoing Wilmer City Councilmember Phyllis Slough, who served on the council in 2012, 2014 and 2019, each two year terms.
