WILMER – It was a warm day, but the ice didn’t melt as the city of Wilmer held an event called Wilmer on Ice.

Santa Claus also arrived in the late afternoon just days before Christmas to make sure he had the wish list for all the children in attendance.

“This is the first ever Wilmer on Ice,” said Wilmer Mayor Dr. Emmanuel Wealthy-Williams.

“This is the perfect day for something like this. A once in a lifetime thing for one night.”

Wealthy-Williams told the crowd at the event that while many times events during the holidays are for residents in need, the city wanted to make Wilmer on Ice all about coming together.

“This is about coming together as a family,” she said.

“We brought the ice-skating rink to Wilmer because it is about coming together as a family.

“We wanted to create an event where we, as a city get to come together to just enjoy each other.”

There was a toy distribution as well as Santa’s arrival, but the event was also about hot cocoa and tasty tamales.

Special guest KKVI – the city’s host radio station – was also on hand for the party.

As for the toy distribution, the mayor introduced Trinity Shipman an 11-year-old local who was part of the Wilmer on Ice event this year making the city’s toy distribution possible.

“I want you to meet a very special guest who also made this possible,” Wealthy-Williams said.

“I want you to know that it is not too early or ever too late to dream really big.”.

Shipman and her grandmother began an organization called Suga Suga Toy Drive eight years ago and chose Wilmer for its toy distribution this year.

The idea behind the creation of the organization was so no children would wake up on Christmas and not “have a smile,” Shipman said.

“Because they did not get something for Christmas.”

“This year she [Shipman] wanted to do a toy drive for an entire city, so she chose Wilmer and we are thankful and grateful,” Wealthy-Williams concluded.

“Some of the toys we were able to give away this week were because of her vision and her dream.”
