WILMER – Wilmer Mayor Sheila Petta attended Eddie Bernice Johnson Elementary School Awards Day last week and met with the fifth graders at the school. Petta offered the students strong words of encouragement as they are moving into middle school next year.

With the 2020/21 school year being like none other in history, Petta congratulated all the students, the parents and the teachers on completing the school year with a lot of hard work and many sacrifices to make the school year successful.

“You are beginning to spread your wings and the future is bright,”  Petta told those in attendance.  “Continue your education and dream big.”

The Eddie Bernice Johnson Elementary School is the only school in the city of Wilmer, and is part of the Dallas ISD.

The groundbreaking for the school took place in September of 2019 and was officially named Eddie Bernice Johnson Elementary in honor of Congresswomen Eddie Bernice Johnson on April 24, 2020.

The school, which serves students from PreK-3 to 5th grade, was made possible thanks to retired Dallas ISD Trustee member Dr. Lew Blackburn, who fulfilled his promise with the approval of the 2015 bond that included the proposal for a new elementary campus in Wilmer.
