WAXAHACHIE – The Waxahachie Police Department recently announced its 5th Annual “Cops & Kids Picnic,” this Saturday, Oct. 9, at Getzendaner Park.
“We first began the cops and kids picnic to bridge the gap with the community and children who live in Waxahachie,” said OT Glidewell, Waxahachie Police Department’s Community Service Officer.
“At this year’s event, we plan on giving away 75 bicycles to children who need them in the community. We will also be providing a lot of entertainment and a hot dog lunch free of charge to the community.”
The overall intent of the Cops & Kids event is to provide a means for police officers to have positive interactions with children of all ages from the local community.
And, over the past few years during a time when it is more important than ever for the building of a positive and trusting relationship between police officers, families and children, the Cops & Kids Picnic has proven to be a huge success. In fact, the event usually brings thousands of people to Getzendaner Park to connect.
The 5th Annual Cops & Kids Picnic will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and in addition to the bicycle giveaways there will also be bounce houses, obstacle courses, a petting zoo, pony rides, Airsoft, face painting, sport challenges, snow cones, and a hotdog cook-out.
Glidewell said the Waxahachie Police Department is expecting another large turnout for the day as in years past.
Area businesses have also donated their time, manpower and merchandise for the event.
“The department always looks forward to the picnic and the opportunity to interact and give back to the community in this positive and fun environment, Glidewell concluded.
