Venus man’s shooting death under investigation

ELLIS COUNTY – Ellis County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a shooting last week, Jan. 18 around 2 p.m., after dispatch received a report of a shooting in the City of Venus.

The shooting occurred in the 600 block of Bunkhouse Road, where it was reported two adult males were involved in an argument. During the argument, reportedly one of the males – 32-year-old Roy Eugene Vaughn III of Venus – was shot by the second male.

In a statement released by the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department they reported, “Aid was rendered to the injured male, but unfortunately he had already succumbed to his injuries.”

Justice of Peace Judge Louis Ponder, pct. 4, ordered an inquest according to the press release, and Vaughn was transported to the Dallas Medical Examiner’s Office.

At this time, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division is conducting an investigation into the cause of Vaughn’s death.

There have been no arrests made, and this is an on-going investigation.

Venus is located in both Ellis and Johnson counties, and in 2020 had a population of 4,361.
