WAXAHACHIE – A livestock truck accident shut down US Hwy 77 in Waxahachie late last week.

The accident occurred at approximately 2:50 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 when a semi-truck carrying a cattle trailer had a blowout, according to the driver.

Due to the blowout, the truck traveled between two bridges and hit an embankment.

The semi-truck was carrying 20 bulls and 32 calves.

According to officials in Waxahachie, most of the herd was loaded onto another truck and transported out of the area.

There was a veterinarian on the scene providing care for the cattle that were injured.

According to one report, “Some (livestock) did not make it during the crash, and others were injured too bad to unload and were humanely euthanized inside the trailer.”

The former owner of two of the bulls who did not survive said they had been his rodeo bulls and were heading home from a recent rodeo.

The driver of the semi-truck was taken to a hospital for medical care and was in stable condition.

No other vehicles were involved and no other human injuries reported.

While 287 remained open during the incident and cleanup, the intersection at 287 and 77 was closed and did not open until 9:45 p.m. that evening.

The northbound and southbound turnaround lanes remained closed until the following morning at around 7:45 a.m.
