FERRIS – If you thought you blinked and saw a wolf the last few years in Ferris, you might be correct.
In fact, there has been a wolf – or a hybrid dog – working the streets after getting away from its owner a few years ago.
Ferris Mayor Pro Tem Tommy Scott verified the dog was tough too.
He and some of his colleagues attempted to catch him, and he said they got “tore up.”
So when William (Casey) Steele, City of Ferris Animal Control Officer came to the city, he named the wild wolf-dog Gallo and set his sights on bringing Gallo in and finding him a better home.
Steele finally caught Gallo last week.
“Since I began working for the city, I have been trying to catch Gallo,” Steele explained. “I tried getting close to him with treats, I tried live traps – which he would walk in and eat the bait and walk out without setting the trap. The only way I was able to catch him without harming him was with a tranquillizer dart.”
Steele said when he did capture Gallo, the dog had blood on his fur from being shot with pellet guns.
Rumors have abounded that Gallo went around letting dogs out of their yards and pens – to form a pack he could run with.
Now, Gallo will go to a place where he can enjoy some rest and relaxation and meals he does not have to fight to catch.
“I am working with several groups to try and get him to either a sanctuary or a rescue that specializes in his breed,” Steele said.
Steele explained Gallo had belonged to a Ferris resident a few years ago along with a female of the same breed. Both had escaped, and a little over a year ago the female was caught – but Gallo still ran free.
The Ferris Animal Shelter is currently housing Gallo before he is moved to his new home.
