DESOTO – State Representative Carl Sherman (D-109) chose his hometown of DeSoto to make the announcement Saturday afternoon that he has added his name to the Democratic list to run against Republican Ted Cruz in the U.S. Senate race in 2024.
Sherman spoke to a roomful of media and constituents saying he was “called to public office” spending time outlining his objectives if elected.
He spoke about the many faces of those around the state including ranchers and those in the rural communities highlighting violence and higher salaries for police officers, healthcare and more hospitals in rural communities highlighting violence and higher salaries for police officers, healthcare and more hospitals in rural Texas, a rise in tuition costs, and out of control inflation.
He also mentioned top priorities like immigration, gun control and a need for U.S. Senate, Congress, and the Supreme Court to have term limits.
“Texas needs a United States senator who will stand up for all of us, our children, our families, small-business owners and the working people of Texas,” Sherman said.
“We need more good paying jobs in Texas, not just jobs, but good-paying jobs.”
Prior to his official announcement, a video was shown in which his wife Michelle was talking to viewers about the reasons her husband decided to run for U.S. Senate.
It was also emphasized there would be no mudslinging during his campaign.
Sherman will be facing U.S. Representative Collin Allred of Dallas, State Senator Roland Gutierrez of San Antonio, and Nueces County District Attorney Mark Gonzalez who resigned last week from his post.
All four will run in the Democratic primary to face Cruz.
Sherman was elected in 2018 to his District 109 State Representative seat in a strong blue district.
His run for U.S. Senate means he will be leaving his seat in the Texas House of Representatives.
