ELLIS COUNTY – Last week Ellis County cities and the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department recognized National Police Week with ceremonies around the area.

Ellis County Sheriff Brad Norman was in Washington DC during this year’s National Police Week.

He posted at the Sheriff’s Department Facebook page, “Ellis County Detention Officer, Isaiah Bias was honored at the 44th Annual National Peace Officer Memorial Service.

“U.S. Vice President JD Vance was the keynote speaker at the memorial service where I had the honor of escorting Isaiah’s mother and brother to receive the Medal of Honor award posthumously.

“There were 345 names added to the wall this year. We will never forget!”

In addition to the sheriff’s department taking part in the local Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony in Waxahachie, the Waxahachie PD and Red Oak PD also joined fellow first responders from across Ellis County.

During Red Oak’s city council meeting, Red Oak Police Chief Garland Wolf was also presented with a proclamation recognizing May 15 as National Police Officer Memorial Day.

In Midlothian, that city’s police department, community services department and the Northern Ellis Emergency Dispatch met at the Midlothian Conference Center to honor its fallen with a single yellow rose which was placed at the base of the Midlothian Police Department’s wreath for:

City Marshal Clark Blair – end of Watch May 1, 1916.

Police Officer George W. “Tiger” Raffield, Jr. – end of Watch October 23, 1987.

Police Officer Heather L. Phares – end of watch April 21, 2014.
