OVILLA – The Christmas tree lighting in the City of Ovilla will go on - even amid the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. the lighting will take place in Ovilla Heritage Park in the downtown area of Ovilla.
Due to the increasing case load with COVID-19 however, to attend the event social distancing and masks are mandated as required by Ovilla Mayor Richard Dormier’s orders.
With that in mind, this year Santa will not be available for photos, however, he will be at the gazebo to allow the children to wave and drop a Santa wish-list in a provided mailbox.
The Eagle Chorus from Ovilla Christian School will also be present singing holiday Christmas carols.
“We are looking forward to our annual Christmas tree lighting this year,” Dormier said.
The Ovilla Police Department will be hosting its Christmas Toy Drive benefiting the children of Ellis County this year too.
With COVID-19 the department is making some changes though. This year, the Ovilla Police Department will be trying something new and the annual toy drive will be done online.
The police department is asking, in order to cut down on exposure to the children and staff, that the toy donations be ordered online at the business of your choice and then have the toys shipped directly to the Ovilla PD.
They department will be accepting toys for children of all ages.
For logistical reasons, please have any donations arrive to the Police Department no later than Dec. 10 addressed to:
Sergeant Claus Ovilla PD
105 S. Cockrell Hill
Ovilla, TX 75154
One caveat is this is all subject to change depending on the pandemic according to city staff.
“I hope the weather is good and that we have a great turnout,” Dormier concluded.
“Also, I would ask everyone support the toy drive again this year.”
