MIDLOTHIAN – Midlothian Independent School District Trustee Richard Pena recently came home from a three-month hospitalization from his stint with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pena, 47 is a former U.S. Marine Corps veteran and Midlothian Police Department officer now turned local real estate agent.
He said of his COVID-19 experience – of which he is still recovering – that he has learned not to take things for granted.
“I want to thank God for saving my life, and my wife for being the best advocate for me,” Pena said.
Pena started in the ER with an oxygen level at 35 at Methodist Midlothian. From there he ended up in two additional local area hospitals before his return home late last month.
From the original hospital where he was first taken by his wife Jeniffer, he was then Care flighted to a hospital in Plano, where he stayed for two months on several machines and heavily sedated.
From Plano he was returned to Methodist Midlothian, and then on to the VA in Dallas. At the VA in Dallas, he spent three weeks also undergoing rehabilitation.
While it was less than 100 days during his time in the hospital, the community and his family still say they realize his return home is nothing short of a miracle.
