MIDLOTHIAN – Over the past few months, the Midlothian City Council has approved three separate items regarding homestead exemptions for its residents.

Approved on June 27, a 10% homestead exemption, which was effective Jan. 1.

This will also be reflected on property tax bills this fall.

The ordinance was passed for 2023 granting a new general residence homestead exemption equal to 10% of the appraised value of the residence homestead with a minimum exemption of $5,000.

The second item was approved Aug. 17. This was a $70,000 homestead exemption for people with disabilities.

This was also effective for Jan. 1, and will be reflected on property tax bills this fall.

And finally, at a city council meeting in Midlothian last week, council approved a 20% homestead exemption to be effective Jan. 1, 2024. This will be reflected on next year’s property tax bills.

“These actions will result in immediate tax relief for Midlothian homeowners who have homestead property,” Midlothian Mayor Justin Coffman said.

“Since 2018 our tax rate has steadily declined by 5.8 cents while addressing many of our city’s needs.

“The new exemptions offer additional relief to residents, while maintaining the same tax rate as last year, and ensuring the city can meet its obligations to the citizens.”

To qualify for the homestead exemption, an individual must have an ownership interest in the property and use the property as the individual’s principal residence.

If you have not completed an application to apply for an exemption, you can find it at the Ellis County Tax Appraisal District website.
