MAYPEARL – Maypearl ISD is enforcing its phone free zones this school year. In the past, the district has been more relaxed in its enforcement.
The item had been discussed with the Maypearl Board of Trustees on several occasions over the past year.
Maypearl ISD Superintendent Ritchie Bowling said, “The current policy was actually in place in prior years, but the district decided it needed to be fully implemented.”
Bowling explained in prior years students were allowed to use phones in the hallway or cafeteria but enforcing it in the classroom was extremely difficult and caused issues.
“Our concern was the distraction within the learning environment and socialization that was not taking place,” Bowling said.
“We researched how other school districts have done it successfully and products that would help. We advertised early and often with all stakeholders that the district would be enforcing a no cellphone policy and the consequences. We learned over the years that if we allowed phone usage during the day, it would make enforcing it that much more difficult. That is why we went with the full protocols we now have in place.”
At the June 27 ISD school board meeting, the ISD informed the board of trustees about the change and other changes to the current year handbook.
