ELLIS COUNTY – If you noticed an influx of high-performance street cars in the area last week, that’s because the Texas Motorplex in Ennis hosted a drag racing event from March 11 to 17.
There was some concern that traveling on US 287 around the Motorplex would result in heavy traffic and delays due to the event, but by all accounts the event flowed well.
Local police and Ellis County Sheriff’s Department worked hard too, proactively deterring any drag street races or takeovers.
A press release from the Ellis County Sheriff’s office stated, “Our concern as law enforcement is when spectators go from watching the event to participating in dangerous and illegal racing on the streets.”
The main concern was assuring Ellis County residents were safe.
To that end, a local task force consisting of the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, Midlothian PD, Red Oak PD, Ennis PD, Waxahachie PD, and the Ellis County and District Attorney’s Office, along with the Texas Department of Public Safety, were out in force on the local roadways.
“Oftentimes there is danger associated with drag street races and street takeovers,” the Sheriff’s Department said, also reminding that House Bill 1442 and 2899 enhanced the penalty for street racing.
“Ellis County is a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family, and each of our agencies strives daily to ensure the safety of each individual.
“We are honored to serve each and every person living in or visiting our community,” a Sheriff’s Department representative concluded.
