FERRIS – The Ferris Police Department got more than they bargained for last Thursday when a routine traffic stop turned into a drug-related arrest.
According to Ferris Police Chief John DeLeon, on Thursday, Oct. 15 at approximately 4:45 p.m., Ferris PD’s Sergeant Stastny conducted a traffic stop on a dark colored Chevrolet Malibu.
The vehicle was heading northbound on Interstate 45.
The stop was made when the driver of the vehicle, Alexis Garcia Morales, a 27-year-old male from Dallas, failed to make a signal lane change.
The vehicle’s front license plate was also missing.
Both Morales and the passenger of the vehicle, a 21-year-old male also from Dallas, were advised of the reason for the traffic stop.
It was reported Morales appeared nervous, but consented to a search of the vehicle.
Before the search, the passenger “made a comment to Stastny and admitted to having cocaine in a small plastic bag that was located in the glove box of the vehicle,” Chief DeLeon said.
At that point, both Stastny and other Ferris Police Officers searched the stopped vehicle. The search of the vehicle produced approximately 25 to 30 small canisters – of what on the outside appeared to be air fresheners.
Upon opening one canister, a black substance consistent to heroin was found.
A drug test was performed on the substance, and the substance tested positive for heroin.
Both subjects were arrested by a Federal Agency for further investigation for possession of a controlled substance penalty group 1. The approximate weight of the heroine was estimated to be roughly 1.5 kilos [3.30 pounds].
The approximate weight of the cocaine was under 1 gram.
