FERRIS – At the Monday, May 6 Ferris City Council meeting, Ferris Police Chief Eddie Salazar presented a life-saving award to Ferris Officer Christian Cortez for his quick response and thinking when Cortez responded to a call for assistance from an Ellis County Constable.
During the presentation in front of council and attendees, Chief Salazar read: “On May 2, 2019, you responded to a call for assistance from an Ellis County Constable requesting assistance in the City limits of Ferris.
“The call from dispatch came out only as assistance requested. You responded and arrived at the scene within a few minutes of receiving the call. Once on the scene you observed a male subject sitting behind the wheel of a parked car. The subject was bleeding profusely from several self-inflicted cuts on his left wrist. You immediately radioed for EMS to respond. You then applied a tourniquet on the subject’s upper arm to stop the bleeding.
“As backup officers arrived they noticed what you had done and observed the wounds had stopped bleeding. A few minutes later, the Ferris Fire Department and Careflite arrived on scene. The subject was then cared for by EMS personnel. The blood on the subject’s trouser legs and on the seat of his car indicated that a significant amount of blood loss had occurred.
“Your quick response under pressure quite possibly resulted in saving this person’s life.
Officer Christian Cortez, #228, I appreciate your professionalism and determination on this call. Thank you for your dedicated service.”
