Ferris honors memory of beloved police officer

FERRIS – When the Ferris Police Department moves its headquarters to the now Ferris City Hall, the building will have a new name.

Passed by the Ferris City Council on Monday, Sept. 21, the building will be called the “Marty Steinfeldt Police Headquarters,” in honor of Officer Harry Marvin “Marty” Steinfeldt III.

On Oct. 6, 2002, Officer Steinfeldt, 28, responded to a 911 call about a customer shot and killed while pumping gas outside the Diamond Shamrock service station on the corner of Fifth Street and I-45, where the Ferris Valero now stands.

Officer Steinfeldt arrived and was immediately met with gunfire and mortally wounded, but managed to return fire and wound the suspect multiple times, who was then taken into custody. Steinfeldt was transported to Methodist Medical Center in Dallas where he succumbed to his wounds.

On hand to witness and receive the proclamation were members of Officer Steinfeldt’s family, including his mother, father, widow, and now 17-year-old daughter who was born several months after her father’s death.
