FERRIS – On Aug. 16, 2021, Dr. Robert Megna, D.O. and Ferris Family Medicine, P.A. in Ferris entered into a $195,768 settlement agreement with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General.
The OIG website stated Megna and Ferris Family Medicine agreed to pay the amount for allegedly violating the Civil Monetary Penalties Law by receiving renumeration in the form of process and handling payments.
The settlement agreement resolves allegations Megna solicited and received remuneration from laboratory companies Health Diagnostic Laboratory, Inc. and Singulex, Inc., in the form of “process and handling” payments related to the collection of blood.
The settlement was regarding employees at his office allegedly referring patients for laboratory testing services to these companies, which the Medicare program paid.
Megna said earlier this week, regarding the settlement, “For the past 37 years, I have always worked hard to provide the people of Ferris, Texas, and Ellis County with the best medical care I could offer.
“This case did not involve any complaints about my care from my patients.
“The Texas Medical Board fully investigated these allegations and dismissed their case.
“The monetary settlement with HHS was the best way for me to get back to focusing on my patients and the practice of medicine.”
