ELLIS COUNTY – The Ellis County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents of a new holiday scam.

The latest scam is a phone con targeting residents when scammers call and claim to be from the Sheriff’s Office demanding immediate payment for warrants.

When the call is received, the caller claims the person has an active warrant, or one is being issued.

The caller then demands immediate payment to avoid arrest.

The Sheriff’s Department also noted that in order for the caller to sound legitimate, they are using the names of actual Ellis County Deputies, including Chief Deputy Terry Ogden and Deputy Michael Cather (retired).

Remember, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office does not call demanding immediate payment for warrants, request payment over the phone or threaten arrest if the warrant is not paid immediately.

The Sheriff’s Department suggests you hang up immediately; do not provide personal information or payment and report the incident.

“Please be extra vigilant during the holiday season when scammers are more active,” the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page suggests.

If you any have questions about a legitimate warrant or legal matter, contact the Sheriff’s Office directly using the official phone number (972) 825-4901.
