WAXAHACHIE – When the pandemic swept across the county, it put the Republican and Democratic Primary runoff elections on hold until next month.
It was on March 20, 2020 Texas Governor Greg Abbott sent out a proclamation suspending the election code and postponing the runoff primary election date until Tuesday, July 14.
In Ellis County, this meant the Sheriff’s runoff race.
The rescheduled date of July 14 was chosen to match with the Special Election date for the Texas State Senate District No. 14 seat.
This Special Election had already been ordered for Tuesday, July 14 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Early voting by personal appearance for the July 14 date begins on Monday, July 6 and runs as follows: Monday, June 29, 2020 through Thursday, July 2, 2020, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, July 3, and Saturday July 4, 2020 – no voting due to the July 4 holiday; Sunday, July 5, 2020, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Monday, July 6, 2020 to Friday, July 10, 2020, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Ellis County runoff election will see incumbent Sheriff Chuck Edge and challenger Brad Norman face off to vie for the seat.
The race was a three-person race in which Edge and Norman had the most votes, neither with a 50% lead.
Edge has been in the Sheriff’s seat since 2017 when he was originally chosen to replace Johnny Brown, who resigned before his term was complete.
Norman has worked for the Sheriff’s office in the past during the previous administration.
