WAXAHACHIE – Ellis County Commissioners voted unanimously to approve changes to the voting precinct boundaries as of Jan. 1, 2026.
This change is in accordance with Texas Election Code as required.
The change was determined necessary at the most recent election’s board meeting when it was discovered two precincts needed to be split due to numbers growing larger than election code allowed.
Ellis County Elections Administrator Jana Onyon said, “This pertains to chapter 42, which requires that we look at all the precincts every odd year in May and April to see if there are any not in compliance with that chapter of the election code.”
Onyon explained they had identified two precincts that have had growth where active registered voters are right at 5,000 or over 5,000.
This requires a split because the election code states there may only be up to 5,000 active registered voters in each precinct.
Currently, there are 59 precincts.
With the necessary changes, there will be 61 precincts as of the new year.
The precincts affected include voters in both Commissioner Pct. 3 Louis Ponder’s district as well as Pct. 1, Randy Stinson’s district.
This includes areas in Waxahachie and a portion in Midlothian.
“The best thing was to go ahead and split them because there was no precinct that we could split off and join part of it,” Onyon said.
“We can’t change the JP boundaries. So, the best idea was to split it on a major road so that is what we did.”
The split will involve precinct 1006 with the new portion being 1060.
The second split will be in precinct 1038 with that new portion being 1061.
The change will be effective Jan. 1, 2026, and will involve no cost to voters.
New cards will be sent out at that time designating the new precincts.
