ELLIS COUNTY – According to a post at the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page, “The shelter service provider for Ellis County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control has had to close down due to illness in the shelter.”

A statement posted with the message reported there was a Canine pneumovirus outbreak at the SPCA of Texas Ellis County Animal Care Center.

The message stated, “If there is an unfortunate situation that someone is bit by a dog, we will be able to take those dogs into the shelter.

“Unfortunately, we are not able to pick up strays at this time.

“We understand that this may cause some inconvenience, and we apologize in advance for that.

“Our ACO staff are facing the same struggles during this time, as they do not enjoy not being able to do their jobs and serve the public in the full capacity they normally do when the shelter shuts down.”

It was also noted the sheriff’s office is committed to serving the public and meeting the needs of the citizens of Ellis County and they are currently working on the implementation of a temporary housing situation while working with other area shelters.

Anticipated reopening date for the Ellis County Animal Care Center is Jan. 24. Anyone finding a stray or injured dog, please contact the ECSO at (972) 937-6060 and they will attempt to handle the situation “as quickly as possible when the shelter has reopened.”
