OVILLA – The Texas Self Storage Association (TSSA) was recently invited to tour Shriners Children’s Texas hospital in Galveston, according to a media release.
This visit acknowledged the organization’s ongoing charitable fundraising efforts over the last 24 years.
Following the hospital tour, TSSA representatives presented a check for the 2024 fundraising total to the hospital amounting to $179,694.05.
The 2024 donation brings the association’s lifetime contributions to $2.71 million.
This year’s tour was notable as TSSA was honored with a newly installed engraved plaque outside the Quiet Mobility Room on one of the patient service floors of the hospital.
According to Access Self Storage owner and Ovilla City Councilmember Doug Hunt, who is actively involved in the self-storage organization, “TSSA has been raising funds for the Shriners Burn Hospital for around 18 years.”
Hunt mentioned that the first year TSSA’s donation was approximately $3,500.
“I never imagined we would start donating nearly $200,000 each year, but that has been the trend for the past seven years,” Hunt explained. “It demonstrates the generosity of the storage owners in Texas. I simply call and present the idea to the owners, and they are the ones who generously contribute each year. I am proud to be the spokesperson, but prouder of all the TSSA members because they deserve all the credit.”
The engraved plaque will be displayed in recognition of TSSA’s longstanding commitment and passion for raising funds to support the children at Shriners.
The Quiet Early Mobility Room is a safe space for patients learning (or re-learning) how to stand or walk.
The floors are covered with padding to protect children from injury if they fall. This room also offers therapy for patients who are easily overwhelmed or overstimulated, providing fewer distractions and noises compared to the Rehab gym.
TSSA stated they will continue their fundraising efforts in 2025, aiming to reach the $3 million mark for its lifetime donation total.
