GLENN HEIGHTS – Animal shelter officials in the city of Glenn Heights, which sits in both Ellis and Dallas County recently secured a number of raccoons that tested positive for distemper.
The animals were found along the Glenn Heights and Lancaster city border.
Canine distemper, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is a “contagious and serious disease caused by a virus that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems of puppies and dogs.”
The virus can also be found in wildlife such as foxes, wolves, coyotes, raccoons, skunks, mink, and ferrets.
Remember to have your pets vaccinated regularly for rabies and distemper/parvo.
If your pets show symptoms of distemper such as watery to pus-like discharge from their eyes, fever, nasal discharge, coughing, lethargy, reduced appetite and vomiting, take it to your vet immediately.
