FERRIS – The City of Ferris is grieving the tragic loss of a 7-year-old child on Saturday, May 23, following the fatal firearm incident in the Shaw Creek area near Tidwell. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family, the children who were present, the neighbors, and everyone who has been impacted by this heartbreaking loss.

Ferris DPS has confirmed that Takievon Holmes, 24, was taken into custody and is currently charged with tampering with physical evidence and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. This remains an active investigation, and additional charges remain under review as Ferris DPS continues working with the Texas Rangers, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ellis County District Attorney’s Office.

The City of Ferris also reminds residents that chaplaincy services remain available for first responders, affected families, and anyone impacted by this tragedy who may need support during this difficult time.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy, and when a child loses their life, the impact reaches far beyond one home or one street,” said City Manager Dr. Brooks Williams.

“Our focus remains on the family, the integrity of the investigation, and the responsibility we all have to treat firearm safety with the seriousness it deserves. Firearms must be secured, they must be kept away from children, and adults must understand that a moment of carelessness can create consequences that can never be undone.”

Deputy City Manager John DeLeon, who oversees public safety, said Ferris DPS and its partner agencies have approached the investigation with urgency, care, and professionalism.

“Our officers and first responders responded to an incredibly difficult scene, and they have continued to work carefully with our state, county, and prosecutorial partners,” DeLeon said. “This investigation will continue to be handled with attention to the facts, respect for the family, and a commitment to making sure the case is developed appropriately.”

The City of Ferris asks every household to use this moment as a serious reminder that firearms, including handguns, rifles, and any other weapon capable of causing harm, must be stored in a way that prevents access by children. Safe storage is not simply a recommendation, it is a responsibility, and it is one of the most basic steps adults can take to protect children inside a home.

We also recognize the weight carried by the officers, firefighters, medics, investigators, dispatchers, and partner agencies who responded to this incident and who continue to carry out the work required in the aftermath. The city is grateful for their service, their professionalism, and the care they have shown during a deeply painful situation.

The City asks the public to avoid speculation, to respect the family’s grief, and to allow investigators and prosecutors to complete their work. Additional information will be released when appropriate.

All persons charged are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
