WAXAHACHIE – Ellis County Commissioners voted unanimously to named Commissioner Kyle Butler, pct. 4, to the position of Judge Pro Tem for of the court.

County Judge John Wray pointed out the position has been vacant for a few months.

Wray said he wanted to share, “I will not be able to attend the meeting on Oct, 27.

“I feel like I have a good excuse – my daughter graduated from law school this past May and took the bar exam and she passed.

“She is working in Houston for a large law firm, and they are having a special swearing-in event that afternoon in Houston.

“It is something I can’t miss.”

He said that in his absence, he felt it was best to fill the Judge Pro Tem position for his upcoming absence.

The Judge Pro Tem position is vacant because Commissioner Lane Grayson,  pct. 2, who previously held the role, resigned from his county post effective May 1, 2026.

It was not mentioned how long Butler would be in the Judge Pro Tem seat, but he is up for re-election in the Nov. 3 midterm election.

Butler is running against Democratic challenger Dr. Oyinkansola Jinadu.
