ENNIS – The Texas Historical Commission has recognized the Brooks Family Cemetery in Ellis County as a significant part of Texas history by awarding it an Official Historic Texas Cemetery Marker.

The designation honors the cemetery as an important and educational part of local history.
A dedication ceremony to commemorate the event is planned for Thursday, Nov. 20, at 6 p.m.

The ceremony and reception will be held at the Ennis Public Library, 501 W. Ennis Ave., Ennis. A brief history of the Brooks Family Cemetery will be presented.

This small family cemetery contains six graves with burial dates between 1885 and 1935.  The site was designated a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2018.

The Ellis County Historical Commission invites the public to share this exciting historical event and learn the history of this pocket-sized cemetery located behind an apartment complex on the 1100 block of East Burnett Street west of I-45 in Ennis.

The state of Texas has the largest marker program in the United States with approximately 17,000 markers, and Ellis County is home to 131 historical markers.

A subject qualifies for a marker based on two criteria – historical significance and age. Historical significance is established by reviewing its role and importance in local history and the age requirement depends on the topic.

The THC’s Texas Marker policies are outlined in the Official Texas Historical Marker Procedures and can be accessed on the Ellis County Historical Commission website: elliscountyhistoricalcommissiontx.weebly.com under Historical Markers.
