Annual Ferris Christmas on the Square canceled

FERRIS – Cold, rainy weather forced the cancellation Saturday of the annual Christmas on the Square, as well as several other city’s Christmas events.

“I know this is a great disappointment to the kids not to have their pictures taken with Santa” said Charles Hatfield, president of Ferris Chamber of Commerce, co-sponser of the event.

Co-sponsored by the City of Ferris, the event takes months of planning and preparation.

“We thought about having the entire event inside the big tent and pavillion,” said Eddie Wiechman event co-ordinator.

Wiechman said more than 70 volunteers helped in preparations.

In an email Friday, Hatfield stated, “In light of forecasted heavy rainfall, it has been decided to cancel the annual Christmas on the Square and holiday parade.

“Much enjoyment of the event comes from the involvement in the parade and outdoor activities –both of which would be adversely affected by the rain and potential for scattered thunderstorms.

“While we regret the need to alter such a fine tradition, the decision to cancel this year’s parade has not come lightly.

“This eagerly anticipated annual event celebrates family and community and has become a large part of Ferris’ history.

“The City and Chamber would like to thank the hundreds of parade faithful who turn out along with the fine organizations. You are the essence of what makes this parade so special.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and look forward to seeing you next year.”
