RED OAK – Glenn Heights resident Dewey Wheatley, 65 was pronounced dead last week after the bicycle he was riding was hit by a 2012 Chevrolet pickup after exiting a private driveway in the 500 block of Interstate-35 S.

Northern Ellis Emergency Dispatch center received a 9-1-1 call in reference to the major accident on Dec. 6 at 6:36 p.m.

Red Oak Police Department and Red Oak Fire Rescue were dispatched to the scene along with the Ovilla Police Department.

According to a preliminary investigation, Wheatley exited the drive-way on the bicycle and attempted to cross both lanes of traffic. 

It is not known why he did not yield the right of way to the oncoming Chevrolet truck traveling southbound in the left lane.

The bicycle and the truck collided within the left lane of traffic.

Wheatley was transported to Methodist Central Hospital in Dallas for his injuries, where he died the following morning. The driver of the Chevrolet truck did not sustain injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.
