BARDWELL – A head-on crash Sunday morning in Ellis County left five people dead, including the Bardwell Police Chief Michael Spurgeon Sr., and his volunteer firefighter son, 40 year-old, Michael Spurgeon Jr.

The Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the crash around 10 a.m. Sunday, March 24 on State Highway 34, just west of Highview Park Road.

According to reports, a white 2012 Dodge 1500 pickup, driven by Jose Munoz, of Ennis, was traveling west with an eight year-old girl and a five year-old boy, when for an unknown reason, it veered into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a 2010 Ford Crown Victoria driven by the chief, killing everyone in both vehicles.

According to a Bardwell Volunteer Fire Department social media post, “Our hearts and condolences go out to the family and friends of Bardwell Police Chief Michael Spurgeon Sr., and Bardwell area volunteer firefighter Michael Spurgeon Jr., who were tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident. Please keep our department, our community and the additional affected families in your prayers.”

Viewing for Police Chief Spurgeon and his son will be Sunday, March 31, from 2-4 p.m. at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home, 707 N. MacArthur Blvd., in Irving. Funeral services will be at Plymouth Park Methodist Church, 1615 Airport Fwy., Irving, on Monday, April 1 at noon.
