The dynamics of discipleship (part 25)

Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?” They answered Him, “No.” And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish. – JOHN 21:3-6

Obedience is better than sacrifice as the scripture states and when we obey we are blessed. Are you fishing on the right side of the boat? If you are not catching anything, you might not be fishing where the Holy Spirit is leading.

Jesus was teaching the disciples a valuable lesson on being led by the Holy Spirit, something they should have known after following Jesus for over three years. If you are out for a catch, no matter whether it is souls, money or whatever you are believing for, you must be led by God’s Spirit. The sons of God are led by the Spirit of God.

After confessing that they fished all night and caught nothing, Jesus said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat!” They did and they caught one hundred fifty-three fish. This is the benefit of being led by Holy Spirit’s voice and obeying what He says.

“Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” – JOHN 21:18
