The dynamics of discipleship (part 1)

Now a certain ruler asked Jesus, saying “Good teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”LUKE 18:18

To begin we must see and know what eternal life entails in order to obey God’s commands to not only go, but to make disciples of Jesus Christ! Within this scripture, Jesus explains “The Dynamics of Discipleship.”

Today you can take a poll on the streets and ask people if they are going to Heaven and most will say, “I hope so, or yes, I prayed the prayer, or I was baptized, or I joined the church. All good answers, but Jesus told the rich young ruler that none of these would render eternal life. Now I know what you are thinking, I prayed the prayer, I know, so did I, but the main component that is missing from this equation in many cases is conviction of sin, without which, the prayer avails nothing.

The truth of the matter is this: no one in the New Testament including the Lord Jesus ever led anyone in a prayer to be saved. This is why in the modern-day church many are lost, never convicted of their sinful lives, and never hearing the true gospel of salvation. Millions sitting in a pew thinking they are saved and God is pleased because they prayed the “Sinner’s Prayer” that is not in the Bible.

So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is God.”LUKE 18:19
