RO mayor makes ‘no comment’ on assault charges

RED OAK – Red Oak Mayor Dr. Mark Stanfill has made no comment, and has been out of town the last several weeks since assault charges were filed by Ellis County resident Paul Kern.

Ovilla Police were called to the scene at around noon on April 6 in the 3300 block of Ovilla Road in reference to a disturbance involving individuals arguing over political signs.

The individuals were Stanfill, Kern and Kern’s colleague, Chris Moses.

Stanfill had initially called 911 in Ovilla where his veterinary clinic is located because, according to a police report, he “felt threatened.”

Stanfill stated he had contacted Moses regarding political signs on private property.

The property owner had contacted Stanfill, and said the signs were placed without his permission.

The signs were also on the property near Stanfill’s veterinary clinic.

Stanfill met with Moses and Kern on the property about the signs, and a verbal argument ensued.

According to the police report, Stanfill placed his hand on Kern’s shoulder and more harsh words followed, which Stanfill felt were verbal threats by Kern.

Stanfill made it clear to police he did not want to press charges regarding the verbal threats.

The police report also stated, “Kern said he did want to press charges against Stanfill for placing his hands on the man’s (Kern’s) shoulder.”

It was noted the men had interacted in the past regarding signs.

Kern said in an earlier statement, “Chris Moses and I have been working in opposition to getting the bonds passed for a couple of years,” this was apparently the cause of the disagreement.

The “VOTE NO” signs in question are related to the upcoming Red Oak ISD bond election.
