ELECTIONS: Bond and prop election items on Saturday’s ballot

What passed and what didn’t make the cut

ELLIS COUNTY – Cities in the Best Southwest and Ellis County were not only electing city council and school board seats this past Saturday, but there were also a number of bond election and proposition items that various cities were asking residents to consider.

Of the 11 such items on the ballot at this past weekend’s election one of three in Ferris passed,  Maypearl’s proposition passed as did the four Midlothian bond items.

 

FERRIS

The City of Ferris residents said no to a proposition Saturday that would have increased and elected alderman from two to three years. There were 87 votes for the extra year and 139 voters who thought it was a bad idea.

One bond proposition passed and one failed in the City of Ferris.

Voters said yes with 143 votes for and 89 against the issuance of $3,500,000 bonds to acquire, construct, improve, equip or enlarge the city’s public safety facilities including the construction of a fire station.

Not passing with 112 votes for and 120 against was the issuance of $7,000,000 bonds by the City of Ferris bring in a fiber optic cable system to provide broadband internet service.

 

MAYPEARL 

City of Maypearl’s Proposition A passed reauthorizing the local sales and use tax at the rate of one fourth of the one percent to continue providing revenue for maintenance and repair of municipal streets. 

 

MIDLOTHIAN

Those voting yes on the bond election items in Midlothian can be happy that all four items on the ballot passed, Proposition A, the issuance of $46,000,000 tax bonds for constructing and equipping a public safety and police headquarters building passed 3,031 for and 1,840 against.

A proposition for the issuance of $25,000,000 tax bonds for constructing and equipping a municipal civic building to contain city hall and a public library passed with 2,788 votes in favor and 2,070 against.

Proposition C to issue $19,000,000 of tax bonds passed 2,616 for and 2,238 against for the constructing and equipping a public recreation center.

The fourth proposition saw success with 3,403 for and 1,450 votes against the issuance of $35,575,000 tax bonds for city street and road improvements.

 

WAXAHACHIE 

Those hoping for a proposition win for the Waxahachie Independent School District Proposition A issuance of $127,000,000 of bonds for school facilities and to purchase necessary sites for school facilities were disappointed when that vote failed 3,861 against to 2,897 in favor of the prop.

 

ELLIS COUNTY EMERGENCY SERVICES DISTRICT NO. 5 SPECIAL ELECTION

 

ESD No. 5 Proposition A

Authorizing an increase in the maximum ad valorem tax rate that Ellis County Emergency Services District No. 5 may impose on property within the District to a rate not to exceed ten cents ($0.10) per one hundred dollars ($100) valuation.

For: 167 or 31.93%

Against: 356 or 68.07%

 

ESD No. 5 Proposition B

The adoption of a local sales and use tax in Ellis County Emergency Services District No. 5 at a rate not to exceed two percent (2%) in any location in the District.

For: 188 or 36.36%

Against: 329 or 63.64%
