Hawks rock Mabank, 11-1

RED OAK - The Hawks Varsity baseball hosted Mabank on Thursday, March 18 at Buddy Groom field in another District 15-4A match up.
In the first inning Mabank wasn’t able to generate any offense, but the Hawks, although they didn’t score either, hit the ball well, just right at the Mabank fielders.
I think everyone there had the sense the Hawks would eventually explode for a big inning.
In the second inning Mabank was able to sneak a run across, but it was the third inning when the Hawks finally exploded for eight runs.
The Hawks found the gaps in the outfield and were aggressive on the bases which kept them out of double play situations for most of the inning.
After shutting down Mabank in the top of the fourth, the Hawks added three more runs in their half of the inning going up 11-1.
In the top of the fifth, Mabank needed at least one run to play another inning, but the Hawks pitching and defense once again denied any chance at that and got the win in five innings.
The Hawks ended up with 11 runs on six hits with two errors and as of press time are now 3-0 in district play and 10-8 overall.
The Hawks winning pitcher was Travis Wallis.
Earlier in the week and coming off their Ennis Baseball tournament Championship, the Hawks traveled to West Mesquite and put up 17 unanswered runs defeating West Mesquite 17-0.
With last week’s weather, several games had to be cancelled or rescheduled so check the high school’s Web site at http://redoakisd.org/ for updated schedules.
