Red Oak Lady Hawks losetwo
RED OAK - The Lady Hawks played two very good teams last week; the Terrell Lady Tigers and the Allen Lady Eagles. The Lady Tigers are one of the favorites to win district 15-4A (4-2) this year and the Lady Eagles are a 5A school and at game time, they were tied for 1st (4-1) with two other teams in district 8-5A. Even though the varsity Lady Hawks lost both games to these teams, they gave each of them a scare and maybe without some current injuries, could have upset two of the top teams in the area.
On Tuesday January 13th, they hosted the Lady Tigers. The Lady Tigers held the height advantage and the lead most of the game. The Lady Hawks, at times, found themselves down by double digits, but kept fighting back. Late in the 4th period, the Lady Hawks had fought their way back to within 5 with plenty of time for an upset. They did it like they normally do, through full court pressure, steals, fast break baskets, defensive stops, and a few 3-pointers mixed in. It was enough that the Lady Tigers to start calling time outs to try and figure way to get out of Red Oak with a win.
Although they did go on to win 61-54, the game was closer than that down the stretch.
The second game of the week saw the 5A Allen Lady Eagles come into Red Oak on Friday January 16th. Watching them warm-up before the game, you had to wonder how the Lady Hawks would complete against a much "larger" team. The Lady Eagles quickly established the inside game, but they could not shake the speedy Lady Hawks. They were able to get double digit leads a couple of times, but the Lady Hawks would rally back and keep the game close each time. Finally late in the 4th, the Lady Hawks had taken the lead. From that point on it became an aggressive game. Both teams traded fouls, free throws, fast breaks, steals, and blocked shots. With less than 6 seconds left in the game the Lady Hawks needed a basket to tie the game, but the Lady Eagles denied them a good shot and the Lady Hawks lost another close game 48-50. Although there were a few tears shed after the buzzer sounded, the Lady Hawks can hold their heads high, as they played two great games against two very good, and most likely, play-off bound teams.
The JV Lady Hawks also played on the same nights and were defending their undefeated season. Against the Lady Tigers of Terrell, they had to earn every basket the first half. However, during the 2nd half the Lady Hawks slowly began to pull away and really put the game out of reach early in the 4th and remain undefeated with a 42-27 win. Against the Allen Lady Eagles, they found themselves up against what is probably the best team they have played all season. With a couple of their star players now moved up to varsity to help with injuries, the JV Lady Hawks would have to play harder to remain undefeated. The Lady Eagles got off to an early start, but he Lady Hawks kept it close and fought every second of the way. Late into the 4th period the Lady Hawks made a couple of good runs, but had to resort to fouls to stop the clock. Allen was able to convert on most of the free throws and that would end being the difference in the game, despite the final 29-38 score. The JV Lady Hawks lost their first game of the season, but it was not a district game, and it was a much closer game the score indicates.
