Hawks sweep Mabank
RED OAK - The Hawks were looking to get back in the win column against the Mabank Panthers, but it ended up easier said than done.
In a game where the Hawks and Panthers traded leads on almost every basket, the Hawks found themselves down by two at halftime.
We’re not sure what coach Foster and Bowen said to the players at halftime, but the Hawks came out a different team and played with a more aggressive style.
With several quick steals the Hawks quickly took the lead back and seemed to control the tempo of the game. The defense also stepped up with several great blocked shots by Jimmy Granzow (#33) and Earl Graves (#32) late in the fourth. With the Hawks up by five the Panthers were able to come back with a three pointer and free throws to take a two point lead with 5.3 seconds left in the game.
The Hawks needed to go nearly the length of the court and score and amazingly, with the ball in the air, the buzzer sounded as the ball snapped the net for the score and sent the game into overtime.
During the 4 minute OT period, the Hawks continued their aggressive play and were able to knock down big free throws. It became obvious that the Hawks had more gas in their tank and went on to win one of the most exciting basketball games in quite sometime.
With their 68-67 overtime win over Mabank, the Hawks are now 2-1 in district play.
In the early games, the JV had a 20 point lead at halftime and rolled over Mabank 81-49 while the freshman boys won a close game 48-43. It was a good night for Hawks basketball.
