RED OAK - The Hawks hosted the Ferris Yellow Jackets on Dec. 2 in what would turn out to be three very exciting games.

The freshman teams had the first game and would see several lead changes.

The Hawks were able to find a little breathing room and with only a few seconds left held off the Yellowjackets for a close 61-59 win.

The JV would eventually turn out to be a run away by the Hawks.

The Hawks played very good inside defense and were able to get many steals and convert them into fast break points to put the game out of reach mid way through the third period.

The JV boys went on to win 72-51.

The varsity game was one of the games where you were either on the edge of your seat or standing up.

The Yellowjackets came into Red Oak with some impressive wins over state ranked 3A teams and showed everyone why.

The Yellowjackets started out strong while the Hawks look flat and had trouble scoring in the first period.

The Hawks were able to get things going and they chipped away at the Yellowjackets lead.

Eventually, the Hawks would take the lead and looked as if they had things in control only to see the Yellowjackets come back with long range three-pointers.

With the Hawks clinging to a three point lead with lees than 20 seconds left in the game all the Hawks wanted to do was prevent a three point shot.

The Yellowjackets were able to get the ball to half court cleanly and off a screen got the ball into their best three point shooter who found the bottom of the net tying the game with about nine seconds left.

A foul off the three point shoot sent the Yellowjackets to the line shooting 1 and 1 and the shooter made both baskets giving the Yellowjackets essentially a five point play.

The Hawks were able to move the ball down court, but the Yellowjackets defense would not allow a shot as the buzzer sounded.

The Hawks missed several key free throws down the stretch that may have changed the outcome of the game, but give Ferris credit, they played a very good game on both sides of the ball.

The Yellowjackets won the game 53-52.

The Hawks next home game will be Jan. 3 when they host Lancaster.
