RED OAK - The Hawks came away with their first 2008 district win on Friday, Oct. 10 beating the Mabank Panthers 34-26.

The Hawks have played some pretty exciting games so far this year and the game against the Mabank Panthers was no different.

Although Mabank had 309 yards passing compared to Red Oak’s 98, the Hawks ground punished Mabank.

Nic Boyd (#7) carried 27 times for145 yards and Ishmael Harrison carried seven times for 101 yards.

The Hawk’s rushing game out ran Mabank 384 yards to 184 yards of which 165 was by the Mabank QB thanks to good downfield coverage.

Both teams had big play weapons and through the course of the game, used them all, but the difference seemed to be a well balanced run and pass attack by the Hawks.

For the second week in a row, out of the halftime break, the Hawks gave up a touchdown, but just like last week, the defense stepped up time and time again and had three interceptions in the game including a diving catch by Alex McGraw (#11) late in the game to keep Mabank from driving down the field.

However, Mabank was able to stop the Hawks offense and force a punt and Mabank went to work with the score tied at 26.

Mabank got close enough to attempt a long field goal with 12 seconds left in regulation, but the kick was wide left.

With a couple of seconds left, ran the clock out to force overtime.

The Hawks won the overtime toss and elected to play defense first.

With the ball on the 25 yard line, Mabank went back to work on offense and on the third play of their drive; the Hawks defense came up big again by forcing a fumble.

The Hawks finally got their chance in OT and went to work with the ground game.

Nic Boyd (#7), on a sweep, broke one down the sideline for a touchdown only to have it called back on a holding call.

The offense went back to the ground game pounding the Mabank defense and had moved to the one yard line and finally, on a QB sneak by Grady Latimer (#9), put the ball into the end zone giving the Hawks their first district win.

The Hawks completed the two point conversion in the hands of Boyd bringing the final score 34-26.

The Hawks will travel to Terrell on Friday, Oct. 17 and kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. See the ROISD web site for directions and come see some more exciting football.
