Red Oak Hawks suffer heart-breaking loss
The Ellis County Press
MESQUITE - The Hawks traveled to Memorial Stadium to face the team that ended their playoff run last year, the West Mesquite Wranglers. If you were unable to attend this game, you missed one of the best high school football games this season. If you were at the game, you were probably standing every second of the game.
Coach Mike Shields and his Hawks came ready to play. In fact, this was the best game the Hawks played so far this year.
The game started with the Wranglers recovering an onside kick.
The Wranglers drove the ball down near the red zone, but the Hawks defense stiffened and only allowed a field goal. The Hawks showed the Wranglers they were there to play and drove down the field and scored a touchdown.
The Hawks defense would not allow another point in the first half and the Hawks offense scored another touchdown in the second quarter.
After halftime, the Wranglers came out and caught the Hawks flat and drove the ball down for a quick touchdown and a two-point conversion. After forcing the Hawks to punt, the Wranglers put another field goal on the board tying the game at 14.
The Hawks finally came around and scored a late third quarter touchdown taking a 21-14 lead. Both teams slugged it out in the fourth quarter with the most exciting plays coming with just over two minutes to go.
On a night where Nic Boyd (#7) had a huge game, Boyd broke a 58-yard touchdown run down the Mesquite sideline bring the score to 27-28 Mesquite.
Most coaches would have gone for the tie with by kicking the PAT, but coach Shields’ is not your average coach.
After a timeout, the Hawks offense came back out on the field to attempt a two-point conversion. With Travis Wallace (#2) replacing an injured Grady Latimer (#9), Wallace took the snap and found a wide open Seth Rushing (#24) in the end zone for two points giving the Hawks a 29-28 lead.
The Wranglers got a good return on the ensuing kick off putting them in good field position, however in a game where the Hawks defense would rise up over and over, they shut down the Wranglers ground and air attack forcing a punt with just over a minute left in the game.
The Hawks just needed to run the clock out. With about 50 seconds left in the game, the Hawks turned the ball over on a fumble.
The Hawks defense would be tasked again to stop the Wranglers and that they did. With the Wranglers down to their last time out and facing a fourth and 11 from their 39-yard line, the Wranglers ran the clock down to one second and called time out.
The Wranglers field goal unit came on the field to attempt a 50-yard field goal attempt. With a breeze at the back of kicker Justin Stout, his kick was good to win the game 31-29 as the game ended. The Hawks players, coaches, and fans were stunned at the last second win after playing such a good game.
After the game, coach Shields told his players to stay the course and believe.
This was obviously a very disappointing loss. In what some experts picked to be the top 2 teams in the district, Lancaster and W. Mesquite, the Hawks played both of these teams down to the last play in each game and are getting better each week.
The Hawks are now 0-2 in district play, but by no means out of the playoff hunt.
There’s still a lot of football left to be played and the Hawks are only going to get better.
The Hawks host Mabank on Friday, Oct. 10 in another district game. Come out and pack the stands, and show your support.
