ABILENE – Two Ferris powerlifters competed at the state meet on Saturday, March 29 in Abilene.

Payden Bertrand placed eighth out of 12 in the 242 pound weight class with a total of 1,460.

He squatted a personal best 580 pounds, bench pressed 335 pounds and dead lifted 545 pounds, also a personal best.

What really made this memorable was him finally beating Chris Brent of Kaufman.

Brent had beat Bertrand by five pounds at the district and regional meets and by 15 at a meet in Van.

This time around Bertrand had the last laugh by lifting 20 more pounds than his rival.

Jacob Flores lifted in the 148 pound weight class and placed seventh out of 12 lifters.

His total of 1,130 was a personal best.

He squatted 420 pounds, bench pressed 265 pounds and dead lifted 445 pounds.

Bertrand and Flores, both seniors, made their last-ever powerlifting meet a fun and memorable one.
