ELYSIAN FIELDS – On Saturday, March 8, three out of the six Ferris Jacket powerlifters who qualified for regionals advanced to state.
Payden Bertrand and Jacob Flores both placed second in their weight classes and will lift at the state meet in Abilene on March 29.
Chris Anderson placed third in his weight class and will go as an alternate.
He will only lift if someone doesn’t make their weight at the state meet.
Bertrand, who competed in the 242 pound weight class, finished with a total of 1,460 pounds which was only five away from first place.
Flores totaled 1,125 pounds in the 148 pound weight class and Anderson lifted 910 pounds in the 132 pound weight class.
This is the fifth straight year a lifter from Ferris will have gone to the state meet.
It’s an impressive achievement seeing as how the powerlifting program at Ferris has only been around for five years.
Humberto Hernandez medaled for the Jackets as well.
He placed fifth in the Super Heavy Weight class while totaling 1,355 pounds.
Tyler Griffith and Cesar Franco also competed at the meet. Griffith finished in seventh place in the 198 pound weight class with a total of 1,235 pounds.
He tried and came very close to passing up three lifters and placing fourth with his last deadlift, an attempt of 495 pounds, but couldn’t quite pull it out.
Franco totaled 625 pounds in the 114 pound weight class and placed seventh.
Ferris placed fifth as a team out of 23 schools, higher than any other school from their district.
A week earlier Crystal Ortiz competed at the girl’s regional meet in Forney.
She didn’t reach her goal of qualifying for state but still did well enough to place eighth in the 105 pound weight class.
