WAXAHACHIE - Varsity Results: The Varsity tennis team competed in their district tournament April 7 and 8 in Corsicana. The boys team finished in fourth place in district. The girls team took home their highest finish in 10 years, finishing in second place.
Danielle Calhoun (#2 seed in the tournament) won the District Championship in Girls Singles. She dominated the first day of the tournament, only losing one game in her first three matches (which is 36-1 in total games...WOW). She played the #1 seeded player from Ennis in the finals.
She lost the first set, but found her stride and won in three sets to bring home the gold medal. She will compete in the Regional Tournament on April 19-20 at the Waranch Tennis complex at the University of North Texas.
In the boys singles draw, Justin Miller (Junior and #4 seed in the tournament) fought for almost three hours and defeated the #2 seeded player in the tournament in three sets to take the bronze medal. He will be an alternate for the Regional Tournament.
Austin Hunt (Senior) and Savannah Summers (Freshman) won fourth place in Mixed Doubles, losing a heart-breaker in the third set tie-break to Corsicana.
From Head Coach Perry Nutt: “I’m always proud of my players, but the past two days have been exceptionally great. I had many parents and coaches from other schools approach me, complimenting the upbeat attitude and work ethic of our kids. They represent our school and city in such a positive way and are deserving of any praises they receive.”
