Wranglers knock Hawks out of playoff hunt
RED OAK - Trevon Boykin passed for 318 yards and three scores and ran for two more as West Mesquite knocked Red Oak out of a possible playoff spot in a District 15-4A at Billy Goodloe Stadium.
The teams combined to gain 1082 total yards.
West Mesquite marched 76 yards in 10 plays and went ahead 7-0 on its opening series.
Red Oak answered with a 3 play, 70 yard drive and tied the game at 7 with 4:10 remaining in the first quarter when Claud Person ran 64 yards for the score.
Red Oak marched 47 yards on its next series and went ahead 14-7 with one second remaining in the first quarter when Person scored on a one yard run.
West Mesquite marched 81 yards in 11 plays and tied the game at 14 with 7:40 remaining in the second quarter.
West Mesquite stopped a Red Oak drive on the ensuing series with a fumble recovery.
Two plays later West Mesquite scored again and had a 21-14 lead.
Red Oak drove 56 yards in 13 plays and cut the deficit to 21-17 with 16 seconds remaining in the half when Richie Barrientos kicked a 21 yard field goal.
West Mesquite opened the second half with a five play drive that made the score 28-17.
Red Oak drove deep into West Mesquite territory but fumbled at the West Mesquite 21 yard line.
West Mesquite marched 79 yards in nine plays and went ahead 35-17 with six minutes remaining in the third quarter.
West Mesquite outscored Red Oak 21-0 in the third quarter and led 42-17.
The Hawks brought in James Satterwhite who passed for four scores in the fourth quarter.
West Mesquite gained 570 yards. Red Oak gained 512 yards.
Person rushed 15 times for 134 yards and added 116 yards passing.
Satterwhite completed 15 of 24 passes for 232 yards.
Ishmael Harrison caught eight passes for 89 yards.
Although the Hawks are now out of the playoff hunt, they have a little something to prove in their last game at Lancaster on Nov. 5.
Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Lancaster’s Tiger Stadium.
